Edward Hillel Awarded Québec Studio In New York

New York City, February 12, 2003 – Artist Edward Hillel was awarded a residency in the Québec Studio in New York City by the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, as part of a program supporting professional artists.  In addition to the use of the 1,500 square-foot SoHo loft for a six-month period, Mr. Hillel received a grant of $15,000.

Edward Hillel's multidisciplinary production ranges from photography, video, drawings and sculpture to hybrid "sites", installations employing varied media, archives and found materials.  A prominent theme in his work is the concept of memory and how it shapes identity, politics, topography and the individual's role in history and in time.  His projects in France, Germany, the UK, Central Europe and Canada present his personal mapping of multiple worlds, each of which he makes his own.  A global wanderer who constantly interweaves public and private spaces with personal and collective memories, his works retain a  formal beauty as they reveal layers of interpretations and experiences.

Hillel's work has been widely published and exhibited, including at the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).  In 2002, he represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games with the exhibition Coming Soon…  The Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario) is currently touring the exhibition Edward Hillel: Real Stories. In 2001, the National Gallery of Prague (Czech Republic) presented True Stories, a survey exhibition of his work.  In 2000, he received the German Critics' Prize for Visual Art.  In 1999, he represented both Canada and France in Weimar (Germany) Culture Capital of Europe exhibition.

During his residency at the Québec Studio in New York Mr. Hillel will produce several new works, including a multi-channel film projection about New York City.

Visitors wishing to meet the artist can telephone the studio at (212) 941-7963 through the end of June.

Edward Hillel is represented by Galerie Lilian Rodriguez (Montréal) and Galerie Les filles du Calvaire (Paris).
