    Number Six of the Cycle

... Er hat einen Karabiner. Warum steht er da and betrachtes mich so friendlich? ...
I watered the flowers, the poor plants of the orphanage, a Jewish orphanage. A sentry saw me at work . ... He has a rifle. Why does he stand there so peacefully watching me? ... Perhaps in civilian life he was a village school teacher, or an attorney, or a street cleaner in Leipzig, or a waiter in Cologne . ... Perhaps he does not realize things are as they are. Perhaps he arrived only yesterday.
