Peter Boiger

Peter Boiger is a sculptor who resides in Northern California. Born in Altotting, Germany, Boiger apprenticed with Hans Frank in Burghausen, Germany and came to the USA in 1964. His major accomplishment in the area of Holocaust Monuments is the Valley of the Destroyed Communities, at Yad VaShem in Jerusalem, Israel. It is a maze environment of stone, commemorating the Jewish communities of Europe destroyed by Nazi Germany during the Shoah, the Holocaust. It is a major part of the Yad VaShem complex.

  • Size: 360 x 300 x 27 feet high (120 x 100 x 9 meters)
  • Work on the Model Begun in 1983-85.
  • Project Inaugurated in 1992 in cooperation with Dan Zur, landscape architect in Israel. Boiger worked with Zur from 1983 onwards Boiger worked with Zur, especially on the 1:50 model of the Valley of the Destroyed Communities, exhibited at Tel Aviv University in 1996.
  • Yad VaShem lists the main architects as Lippa Yahalom and Dan Zur. Zur received the Israel Prize in 2002.

The Holocaust Memorial for Temple Sinai, Oakland, California was completed in 1991.
Size: 60 x 48 x 8 inches (1.22 x .92 x 0.20 m). The image is that of a guard tower, in front of which are six distored facial images, in front of which is barbed wire.  There are places for six candles and a 7th, patterned after a Chanukah Menorah. To the left are the names of concentration and death camps and ghettos:

  • Treblinka
  • Bergen Belsen
  • Majdanek (Maidanek)
  • Ravensbruck
  • Sobibor
