I had just finished saying,
"...there you see the lonely briefcase
waiting
for the hero who never came back,"
when a guy jumped out of his van.
He tried to pick it up,
tugged at it, and looked at it
and slunk back into his truck.

We had a fine laugh
as the traffic light changed
and the van roared off up the street.
I thought of the sculptor
who faked the man out,
and the hero
who never came back,
of the lives he had saved
at the cost of his own,
and I thought how he lives
a century on,
in a briefcase made out of stone.

News Flash

The Minneapolis Star Tribune, quoted an AP report of November 28, 2000 indicated that "Soviets Killed Wallenberg, Head of Kremlin Panel Says." The story quoted Alexander Yakovlev, Chairman of the commission on rehabiliation of victims of political repression, as saying: "We do not doubt that he was shot at Lubyanka (prison); we must put an end to this story, which has acquired an acute international significance and has been poisoning the atmosphere for a long time." The story suggested that Wallenberg was shot before Stalin's death in 1953. Wallenberg's half-brother, Guy von Darden, however asked for documentary proof.Wallenberg was last sited in Budapest on January 17, 1945. The Swedish-Russian joint commission is slated to issue its final report in January, 2001. The Swedish commision head, Jan Lundvik, indicated that Yakovlev's most recent statements still did not supply documentary proof of one version or another.
