Sheila Hansen is an eighth grade English teacher from Spearfish, South Dakota, who was chosen as a Mandel Fellow through the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for 2000-2001; her phone number is (605) 642-8829 and her e-mail is shansen@rushmore.com. Her fellowship project can be accessed on the Governor's Web site. On the home page, click on the left-hand tab entitled Testimonies from the Midwest. Then click the tab 'liberator units' to read about the US Military Divisions that are recognized for being the first to enter the concentration camps. On the 'Table of Contents' tab, recommended testimonies: Carroll Peterson, Walter Holtkamp, Gilbert Mjoen, Doyle Ream, Delbert McNew, and Dale Olson. In addition, there are four testimonies from former German prisoners of war: Morris Magnuson, Walter Mehlhaff, Virgil Johnson, and Richard Courchine. Lastly, Marge Hess of Flandreau provided previously unpublished photos taken by her uncle, Jay Christensen, at the liberation of Buchenwald.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting, has "America and the Holocaust" which covers the themes: The Holocaust, antiSemitism, U. S. immigration policy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, World War II, and includes timelines, maps, and teaching guides.

The South Dakota State Library, 800 Governors Drive, Pierre, SD 57501, offers free interlibrary loan of their collection through South Dakota Library Network. Visit your local library to arrange an interlibrary loan. Included in your packet of materials is a sample listing of many Holocaust-related titles available for borrowing from the SD State Library's collection.

The South Dakota State Library offers full-text magazine articles (popular and professional), citations, and abstracts through Pro-Quest and Info-Trac, among others. All articles are password accessible. Apply for a free South Dakota State Library membership on-line.

Visit the home page for the South Dakota Historical Society and the state archives newspaper project. More than 1,000 SD newspaper titles on 12,000 reels of microfilm are housed at the State Archives. You may also find WW II-era newspapers on microfilm at your own local library. Examination of local SD papers' coverage (or non-coverage) of the Holocaust and related issues would provide a valuable learning experience for students.
